Aprill made me do it!

Ok, so Aprill hit me up with this meme so I figure what the hell....

Five things that people don't know about me. Sounds simple right, but its not because I don't want it to be, you know, stupid. So here goes nothing!

1. I hate confrontation, any confrontation.

That is interesting really considering my job ( I think anyway ) but its true. Confrontation makes me "lite". Its the only way I can explain it when I get confronted by someone on anything I feel like I suddenly weigh like 2 pounds. My hair feels like it is standing on end and everything gets crystal clear - precise and sharp. Its like I am humming on some kind of cosmic cord that only I can hear/feel.

2. I hate the way I look most of the time.

Now that sounds kind of vain but it is true. I guess that my self image is still stuck on when I was 22 and working construction. I was fit as a fiddle, as the saying goes. I guess the real truth is I have become older and a little insecure but its fixable. I just need to watch what I eat - no more midnight snacks of chips and salsa, ice cream and ice pops. I need to exercise more than I do. I worry about diabetes since EVERY male in my family has had it. My grandfather, my father, probably my great grandfather and I need to set an example for my son in being proactive about a potential problem and not reactive.

3. I have been married for 11 1/2 years.

Lee knows this but then she is my sister but other people do not. I got married when I was 19, we had our son when I was 26. It was kind of funny but when my wife and I got married I think her family held their breath for 9 months thinking that the reason we got married was that she was pregnant. It hasn't always been roses, but if you want to have something of value you have to work at it. Overall I think that getting married to my wife was the best decision I have ever made in my life.

4. I like cultural things: ballet, opera, musicals, etc. etc.

I know its an odd thing for someone raised in the middle of no where in Arkansas but I do love going to the theatre. Movies and television are nice but they don't hold the same level of excitement or anticipation for me that a live production has. Every time you see a live production you see something new or different. It is always unique.

5. I hate sleeping.

Now that one does sound weird but its true. I hate going to sleep at night even knowing that it is something that my body needs. I always feel like I am missing something or its time I could be spending doing something productive. Of course I only average maybe 4-5 hours of sleep a night as it is but still I could be making that paper mache airplane that I always wanted to make or I could build that replica of the Taj Mahal out of toothpicks - hey, it could happen!

So that is my five things. Not as introspective as I might have wanted but its all I can come up with. I promise the next meme that gets tossed my way will be much better or it will suck abysmally!

Now I am supposed to send this on to 5 other people but because of my limited time I don't actually know 5 people on here to send it to right off hand so I will hold this meme card in reserve for later when I do!

Oh, the fence is done and I should have pictures next week sometime! Now to design the tree house - wish me luck.

Where am I?

Well as some of you may notice I haven't posted in a while. The reason is fairly simple....

I have been installing a fence around my backyard.

I opted for the clamshell diggers versus the auger simply to save money, so it took me two days to dig the 28 post holes I needed. I have half of it built with a gate and everything, although I think I will have to redo the gate because it is screeching across the concrete and I have decided to add a caster to the bottom of it so it will roll all nice and pretty.

I took some before pictures and I will take some after pictures when I am done. Hopefully some time next week it will all be done and my son, my dog, my wife, and I will all be happy. Then I get to begin on the treehouse I promised my son I would build. He wants it to look like a pirate ship...not sure how/if that is going to happen!

I do have one picture to share with everyone. It's a picture of the shift I work on at the fire department. I am in the middle.

Yeah, the guys on the right just wish they were as cool as me!

Crawfish, Beer and Superheroes

Well I went to the local Knight's of Columbus Crawfish dinner tonight with my brother, father, cousin and a friend of ours. We ate a lot of crawfish (and yes, we sucked the heads) and drank A LOT of beer. It was a fun evening, saw some people I haven't seen in a while and overall had a great time. My brother took a picture of us afterwards, if I can get it from him I will post it on here maybe.

Not much else, started cutting down a tree in y yard today and I should finish it up tommorrow and afterwards I will begin on the fence! Hopefully the rain will hold off...

Saw this on Ktbuffy's Site and thought it was funny and I wanted to share:

The Garden Begins

So I started my garden last Saturday. I got one of those starter trays and planted some seeds. I didn't want it to just take off so I set it in my kitchen, on the counter, away from the sun and just plain out of the way. I figured it would take like two weeks for the seeds to sprout.

Well I was wrong.

So now I have to rush and get my garden ready or these guys are going to take a header and I will have to start all over. I do plan on taking pictures thorughout the growing season so you can all enjoy my garden.

Guitar?

I am torn. My buddy is sitting here beside me picking at his guitar and I want one. Can I play you ask? No. But I can learn! I have always wanted to play guitar and since I am about to turn 31, I figure it is a good time to learn.

Here's the plan

  • Get a guitar (borrow dad's)
  • Get a book, dvd, something to learn with
  • Practice
  • Practice
  • Practice
  • Practice
  • ROCK OUT!!

Damn, that sounds like a good plan to me. Gonna have to make that happen...

My Celebrity Look ALikes

I found this site the other day while I was surfing the web looking for interesting stuff:

http://www.myheritage.com

VisualDNA

Got this from my sister, thought it was cool, will have to go and compare her's and mine now:

Life or at least that's what I call it!

So I meant to post something around Valentine's day about the guy who really needed a hug. Let me set the stage: Wal-Mart, 9:30 am, cold, kinda windy. As I am entering the store to purchase some food for my next shift at the FD there is this guy not 4 feet away from me. As we have to basically walk right next to each other to go through the doors of the worlds smallest Wal-Mart, I attempt to strike up a conversation.

"So having a good Valentine's Day? Making the trip to Wal-Mart for the last minute gift like me?"

(Ok, so I was shopping for the last minute gift, my bad)

The gentlemen looks at me like he is gonna rip my head off and, well you know how it goes.

"No I am not! What business would it be of yours anyway!" He says, actual spit flying from his lips as he speaks.

Needless to say I was shocked ,a little taken aback. Now I understand that maybe he was having a bad life at that exact moment but generally in the rural south when you talk to someone like I did and its in a joking kind of manner you do not get that response.

"It's none of my business." I said as I stopped walking and allowed him to bull his way into the store in front of me.

So that was my Valentine's encounter, impressive no?

Grad school is blowing chunks right now, although I did get a groovy laptop to do work on which I actually use to play Tribal Wars more than anything - such is my dedication and focus!

I found out something interesting yesterday on the way home. I was listening to NPR when they started talking about immigration reform. Now I am all for immigration reform, but I think we have to be carefull how we go about it and I think that is the general opinion in Washington D.C.. So I am listening to the radio and they are talking about this immigration rally that was held by illegal immigrants.

They were Irish. I hadn't really thought about it before what with all of the immigration rallies and so forth seeming to be predominately Hispanic or Latino in origin but there are about 50,000 illegal Irish immigrants in the United States. So I went and did some reading on it at the following places:

* www.legalizetheirish.org
* Bebo profile for Irish Legal Immigration Reform (kinda like MySpace)
* www.irishabroad.com
* www.irishlobbyusa.org
* www.irishvoices.blogspot.com

Interesting stuff that is interesting to me because my father's family came over from Ireland in the late 1800's and it gets you to thinking about what they went through, what kind of circumstances where they in when they got here, of course being a history major I am aware of what hardships the Irish faced when they came to the United States, but even with that look at the contributions they made to the United States.

Maybe I am biased because I take pride in my Irish roots, but I do find thier achievements impressive.
